We've had a very busy few days!
Yesterday was a very important day for us in Sweden - it saw the arrival of our first "proper" animals to the farm. Nigel had spent a long time trying to find some regional breeds, and finding someone who was prepared to spend time talking to us and help us. Eventually a very nice couple in Orup (about 20 minutes or so away if you don't get lost) who are doing a very similar thing to what we are trying to do, had some Blommehöns spare as he was reducing numbers for the winter. Result, we got 4 hens and a cockerel for free. There are some pics of the new arrivals at http://gallery.vollans.co.uk/v/chickens/Blommehons/
We spent a nice hour or so talking to them, and they showed us around their farm. We especially liked the Linderödsvin (a rare breed Skåne pig), and he offered us some piglets next spring! They also had some fantastic Öland geese which are very similar to the Skånegås, just a tad smaller, but seemingly just as loud and vocal when people come to visit. They also had the Gute Sheep that we liked. They even had a polytunnel, which was the first one we've seen in Sweden, and were assured that they did very nicely! We got them home, and settled in, and this morning they came out and seem quite settled. We even got our first egg - almost unbleached flour like in colour, not quite white, but definitely not brown. Last night was a bad night - a storm brewed up from nowhere, and the rains came very heavily along with terific thunder and lightening. The animals were calmed down, and we went to bed. This morning we found a load of apples on the ground, it was only a few minutes later that we realised a branch had come down, and a huge bough was only just hanging onto the tree. If it had been on the otherside the garage would have been gone! |
