Sorry, very short and to the point. I'll let the pictures tell the story
I got up bright and early, though a little nervy and sad. I got the car packed and made my way to Hertz to drop off the car and explain why it no longer has a wing mirror - I'm starting to think I've my own stalker!
So I filled the car with petrol and said goodbye to Neverlast. Then I filled in the exciting form at San Jose Airport - "who hit you?" I don't know!
I checked in with very little hassle, and settled down for the wait for the flight. Soon enough the flight was called, and this time I was ready for the journey - newspapers, books and CDs ready in case of Lucy.
I was very daring and had a window seat, closed my eyes and hoped... We did take off! The mountains were beautiful, the desert, the plains... I guess if I could sort the takeoff & landing I could quite enjoy it. It's now 9pm and we are approaching Boston. Lucy was on... CDs saved the day! The sunset on the plane is awesome - then again, as you've seen this last 2 weeks, I'm easily pleased.

I went along to the final sessions of INET and to an amazing speach from Debrah Ch? of E-Trade. She spoke at length about how the company had gone from being a $200m a year company to a $5billion a year company in just 3 years - that's sales, not value. The company, unlike a lot of Internet companys is profitable, and has no debt! The mark of the company is that last year they had 4 days when trading was interupted for an hour or so. This is the only time this has happened, and it made headline news across the country. The company used the experience as a basis for a series of new adverts. Though they calculated the news was worth over $20m in airtime, and actually increased the number of customers they had. Quite remarkable!

After yesterdays remarkably short entry, I'm afraid I'm going to make up for it today...
I had breakfast, and made my way to the Convention Centre for the start of the morning. I went to see Elliot on the 3Com stand are see what details she had for me. 3Com had had a bit of a drama that morning, but it was quickly ironed out, it was to do with the advertising campaign that they are running for the PalmPilots. Elliot introduced me to some of her collegues, and they told me about the internet projects that they are running with a local school as a pilot, and the lab that they have at their Santa Cruz headquarters. Tomorrow afternoon I'm not going to the INET sessions, as I've been invited to Santa Cruz to have a tour of the 3Com facility and the lab to see what they are doing for schools. This is too good an opportunity to see "the future" to turn down.

I got up early yesterday, and went out into San Jose to have a little look around again, and take in the really quite beautiful city.
The sessions at today's INET 99 conference were extremely good. The initial session on Learning Tools was fantastic, as was the afternoon session on Digitising Culture, and the final session on Youth on the Internet brought up some interesting issues. Over lunch, we had a long chat with one of the lawyers for AOL, who is on one of the groups looking at privacy on the internet. Some very interesting issues were brought up.
Last night was the Gala Evening, which was held at The Tech. The museum has been extremely well thought out, and has some fantastic exhibits. Everything, with only the odd exception, is hands on, and you can find out how bar scanners work, how CDs work, how fibre optics, telephones, satellites... It really is a museum of the future. I was extremely impressed. Plus also, last night there was a wonderful array of food on offer - from the carving stations to some seriously delicious Japanese food. |

Today's report is rather short, there isn't a great deal to write about of general interest, and I've only just got back from the opening reception.
I got up bright and breezy for the second day of INET 99. Today was to be a course on Accessible Web Sites. I wandered out into San Jose - it was only 8am, but it was nice and warm, and the streets were alive - but in a nice way. I bought myself a copy of the San Jose Mercury, and read it in the fresh air, whist eating a bagel, before going into the session.
